Catacombs of San Callisto

Rome map of  the Catacombs of San Callisto

The Catacombs of San Callisto is one of the more less known attractions in Rome. It is located along with the Appian Way. Since it is a bit outside of the Center of Rome not all tourists find there way here.

The oldest part of the Catacombs of San Callisto was built sometimes around 150 AD and was named after Saint Callixtus (the Catacombs are also called Catacombs of Callixtus). It is most known for the Crypt of Popes that containes tombs from different popes from between the 2nd and 4th century.

It’s really a strange feeling to visit the catacombs. The atmosphere is cold and dark and you are surrounded by the tombs everywhere you look. You walk through a labyrinth of tunnels (be aware not to wander away by yourself, you can easily get lost).
I can recommend it if you want to see something different when you are in Rome.
